How to Use Pears for a Seasonal Transition to Fall

By mid-August, I'm always ready to start making small changes that lean toward fall. When I was younger I'd tackle it all in a day or a weekend, but now I have to do it in stages. One day it was summer; the next day it was totally fall. But actually I really prefer the small changes that come throughout the late summer, day by day. The changes of the light, the outdoor temps, nature's color in foliage, grasses and sky. It's all beautiful and I love to replicate it all indoors.

Part of bringing in fall is timing. Honestly, I really am not ready for a mountain of pumpkins until at least mid-September. I love them and have been known to have stacks of them, but not till the temps drop and I don't feel like an "imposter"... So pears to the rescue. I start using pears mid-summer and finally put them away in the next spring.

There are so many ways and places we can decorate with a pear motif.

An ironstone urn filled with lovely fall hued pears is a work of art. The contrast of the translucent white with the gold/orange/browns/greens of pears is one of the best parts of late summer and early fall decor.

And what goes better with ironstone than a variety of pieces of vintage brown transferware? Above, I made my own "pear branches" with faux pears and some home grown sticks. Add in a couple of chipmunks and you have a fun theme for early fall.

Here are the same DIY Pear Branches used in a vintage Tote

Autumn Tray in the Dining Room

Here, in another ironstone tureen, the colorful oranges in the pears mix with russet, brown, and printed fabric pumpkins alongside a collectible British teapot.

Pears are the focus in this antique print in the Entry Hall. Sunflowers, leaves, and pears organically work together. A small vintage tray holds a trio of concrete pears with a fall fragranced candle.

Over the years my fall baker's rack has been the display piece for many pear themed vignettes.

Lot's of fall color on this baker's rack styling...

...and also a more neutral look.

One of my favorite summer/fall pieces is this "majolica" pitcher, which finds it's way in to all my fall décor.

And my favorite fall wreath with pears.

And back to the hearth room coffee table/bench in another ironstone tureen on a vintage tray.

So, if you're not quite ready for pumpkins, try some pears to tide you over.

Here's some extra fun with gilded pears for Christmas!

  2. I love what you said about stages. That's exactly where I am now. I love the pears. With our England trip in October and being gone much of September, my fall decor will be minimum. I'll get out the wreaths right after labor day and maybe a few other things but it probably won't seem much light of day till November!

    1. oh Jeanie, I can't wait to hear and see about your trip to England. If I could go one place in the world that would be it... in Autumn!

  3. Always appreciate your seasonal inspirations even thought our overall styles are quite different. I go a little slower in fall transition, starting with "Back to School" in a couple of places and lots of sunflowers and fall fruits in others. You got me started with pears last year and I've always done apples starting in early fall. Color leaves and pumpkins will come about mid-September. I purchased a new wreath this year too and like your changes. I need to think about hydrangeas more. They don't grow where I live, but as you said the faux ones area almost always great.

    1. Hi Dana, I love apples too, but tend to use them more in summer. I guess those little pears in golds, greens and browns just remind me of fall. I love hearing about you using pears now, too. I haven't had fresh real hydrangeas in several years because of a couple of "gardener" mishaps of pruning at the wrong time. Thanks for leaving a note!
