Antique Sideboard with Blue Transferware and Ironstone

I've been trying to take my own advice by taking decorating at a slower pace. I'm changing things up with the seasons, but also trying to not let it overwhelm me. During early summer I love using patriotic elements and color for décor, but adding flags to a basic summertime "look" goes a long way for me.

One piece I always try to incorporate into my Patriotic décor is my very old Blue Willow tureen. (Mid-Summer Entry with Blue Transferware Tureen ) It's super old and has the imperfections to prove it. I'm not an aficionado of blue and white pieces, because in reality I'm not a "blue" person. I prefer warm colors and decor so my tastes run more to the brown transferware pieces. But for summer, I gravitate toward red and blue transferware for decorating.

But during summer and the July 4th holiday the tureen is always out on display. I DO have a bit of head scratching when it comes to filling it, though. I'm thinking about a faux white orchid look to use throughout the year. That's what's on my radar. I love orchids, but seem to somehow lose them after a few months of trying to do the right thing with them.

I decided to keep it simple in the tureen and use a straight circular glass hurricane with a white candle nestled in a base of moss.

Along the top shelf on the mirror I have a few pieces of my vintage white vases and planters. The only one of the three that is marked is the one on the right, which is Haeger.

I'm not sure where this cardboard placard originated, but I love sharing it throughout the Patriotic Season. It's been seen on the baker's rack and in the holiday cupboard during the summer season.

I've collected cemetery flags for years. Some of them are from before 1948, but are now near shredded. A mini flag display says instant Patriotic Décor. This year I'm using a few of my ironstone pitchers and vintage crocks in various sizes to hold a grouping of small flags.

Here are a few posts with more fun patriotic looks...

Next post I'll share the Hearth Room mantel and decor!

  3. That's a nice display, Debra. I've got an idea for your tureen - fill it with old baseballs! That would look really cool, especially if you find them with the red stitching.

  5. I understand slowing down Debra, I often wonder how you can change up your decor so often, you’re an inspiration for sure. I love the blue and white, I do not choose it for my house either, but I’m always drawn to it when I see it. Hope you are doing well, have a wonderful week. Cara

  6. I love the understated Fourth of July vibe you've got going on! That's my plan for this year - displaying some of my many blue and white pieces with the few red and white pieces I've collected. With a couple of flags thrown in as well, of course! Love that cardboard placard:) xo Kathleen
