Christmas Centerpiece Basket with Greenery and Guest

I'm sure most of you are doing what I'm doing this weekend...

Recovering from Thanksgiving and getting started on Christmas décor. I have to admit, I did get started bringing in a few Christmas things and brainstorming last week. I did my Thanksgiving decorating early this year so I was able to transition to Christmas without feeling like I was giving it short shrift. I thoroughly enjoyed it by starting early.


For some reason I like to start on the dining tables. I guess because it's a big flat surface and is easily seen. That keeps me on track with a theme and bringing in pieces that will fit. Last year I used my very old goose decoy in my copper boiler on the hearth. I really  loved her/him there all fluffed up in greenery and the center of attention.

I didn't want to recreate the same exact look so I brought out my antique basket from the dining room and made a nest in that. I like this just as much as the copper boiler, and I get to use my basket for something new. 

You all may get tired of Tartan plaid but I really don't. I've always loved it for the holidays and have used it for as long as I can remember. One thing I've learned over the years is it's fun to try totally new things but for Christmas I'm pretty much a traditionalist with color. Last year I used a lot of copper and not as much plaid in the living areas. It's back this year!

Last year I wanted to buy some of these rustic bells, but as usual I was a little late to the party, and couldn't find a good deal. This year I started looking earlier and found these on Amazon for a great price. I didn't know how many bells I would actually use, but I found a deal for 8 or 9, so now I've been trying them out on everything. 

I think they look perfect giving the basket a little oomph and pizzazz.

I've been trying to think what material this goose is and the closest I can come is like the old fashioned corrugated cardboard that were used as egg cartons. His black eyes were lost long ago and I painted some on a few years ago. This year I enlarged them a bit. After seeing geese everyday for several years I've realized I was being skimpy. They have the blackest eyes and will stare a hole in you if they think you have food for them.

I keep extra bar stools here in the corner of the casual dining area and usually I don't "decorate" them, but this one was convenient for some extra little trees. Before I knew it I had created a mini vignette with a few vintage pieces. 

Old boxes, a marmalade crock, old jingle bell wreath and a metal fruit urn all came together for a mini Christmas grouping.
