The Late-Summer Cupboard with a French Country Flair

One of my favorite decor themes for mid to late summer is "chickens". I've never raised chickens or been around them except for a short time when I was a kid and an odd motley group of wild/escaped chickens found our farmhouse. That's where the collection "seed" was planted. Most of my chicken figurines are not worth much, but fun to collect and display throughout the summer months. Back in the 60's one of the decor themes was "Early American" and with that, accessories took on a slightly "farmy" style. Chicken decor sprouted up everywhere, but of course mainly in the kitchen and dining room. (Think chickens and coffee grinders themed wallpaper...)

I'd much rather think of them as French Country decor...

Since they are quirky and colorful, I thought I'd pair them up with my small collection of real and faux Majolica here in the cupboard. One chicken goes beyond "quirky" to out and out ugly, but he's old so he's forgiven and still gets to be part of the flock. (He's there on the bottom left shelf)

I still have a base of my floral French faience pottery, but it's time to change up to the brown transferware. The faience is summery with bright color, but it's time to go more muted colors for late summer/early fall. Since the chicken motif is also a theme in French Country décor, I'll use that as my excuse to pair up with the Majolica and French pottery. 

My Majolica collection is on the cheap with some cracks and chips, but still fun and colorful. After I styled the cabinet I realized I'd left out a few of my better pieces, but they'll show up later this fall season.

I think this pearlized creamy fellow is my favorite. He looks loud and proud, and I once had a Lexus SUV that same color, tehe.

This one has seen better days with a few scratches up top. Looks like he may have been in an altercation.

The little gal below is a planter/vase, and I think she's a bit older, from maybe the 30's. The others are just figural and made by N'Orleans or Napco.

Here's the rooster in question and he's some kind of glazed yellowware  pottery. not attractive, but earns his place because he's very vintage. He appears to have an annoying personality for sure.

Old seed packets add more fun and color and perfect for chicken snacks.

The old chippy stepstool is usually around for more small decor pieces. This time a butterfly pamphlet and some bee skeps.

I'm starting on fall here in the garden room, and making progress through the rest of the house. I'm taking my own advice and trying to make an easy transition with fall decor.
