Valentines By Candlelight

Hello Friends and Welcome to the Lifestyle of Love gathering hosted by our friend Cindy, of County Road 407, where today we're sharing how we use candles and candlesticks in our vintage decor. This is an every-other month group where we share how we use topic items in our vintage decor. Since it's just a few days before Valentine's Day I thought I'd share how I use candles and a favorite pair of vintage candlesticks in a sweet vignette.

If you're coming by from Rachel's at The Ponds FarmhouseHello, and so glad you hopped on over to visit! Everything Rachel does is amazing so be sure and backtrack to visit her when you can get a chance.

I'm not a person that lights candles at dinner or the mantel on a regular basis, but I do love the quiet romantic vibe they bring to a holiday or seasonal vignette. I put this small grouping together on an antique silver tray with a romantic Valentine theme here on the washstand in my Dining Room.

I love using a tray to group smaller elements in a vignette. Today I'm using a vintage silver tray since this is a more formal look calling for a bit of vintage romantic elegance. I found these wonderful vintage celluloid cupid candlesticks years ago and they are the perfect accent for this romantic grouping. They are topped with mini "wine-cork" mini candlesticks.

I'm not sure when they were made, but since they are celluloid it would have been before the 1940's. They had been painted gold first then later covered in white paint. This is a pressed paper painted ex-voto heart displayed on the flower frog.

The one type of candle that I use frequently is a mercury glass votive cup, sometimes with tealights that are easy and economical to light spur of the moment. Fall through New Years, then into Valentine's Day you can see a grouping of votives on trays, in a birdcage, or on a buffet to brighten up a cold and dreary afternoon or evening.

One of the elements of this tray vignette is a small oval French Romantic print (probably from the 60's) in a vintage frame. I think it's so fun to gather pieces to bring a theme and vibe. A small vintage bust of a young girl from the 60's, a small metal jewelry casket, real touch and look rosebuds, and a garland of 3-D hearts are all grouped together on the small tray.

This corner is in the Dining Room and is next to a traffic area, so I have to be careful not to have too much on top. It's easy for a floral arrangement to reach out and grab passersby. This is a very old mirror which usually has some kind of wreath or decoration. This month my moss covered "O" is hanging from a green stripe linen ribbon, adorned with early spring blooms.

You can read about this very old Chromolithograph Here. Notice the cherubic presence with the torch on top.

My large French bust of a young girl sits in another old urn,
as she was broken off her base when I found her.

Every element and detail on the tray and in this corner, creates a vintage romantic feeling, which is even more lovely by candlelight.

Here's another look at these sweet cupid candlesticks.

And another favorite pair of candlesticks that show up in decor; my heavy reproduction concrete alter candlesticks. They usually live on the hearth, but I love bringing them into the Dining Room for a dramatic tablescape.

We hope you'll stay with the Hop and jump on over
to visit CoCo  at The Crowned Goat.

Thanks so much for coming by.

  5. Wowza, this vignette is exactly what I'd like to see during this season on a daily basis! It's beautiful. But you've stumped me. What is a jewelry casket? I had to google that! All these years I had it wrong.
No surprise there. Thanks for joining in AND teaching me something new. Happy Saturday Friend! pinned

    1. Hey Cindy, I know odd name. I guess any type of metal or filigree or glass box or small trunk/ versus a wooden box. I wasn't familiar with that term either until I started buying and selling vintage. Sort of morbid sounding and of course I thought of something tacky to say... but didn't.
