Late Summer Sunflowers in Bloom

August is all about Sunflowers around here...  Mid Summer into Fall is their time to show their happy faces, mingle with some hydrangeas, and wait for some fall leaves to show up. By the middle of July they start mixing in with the early Summer arrangements and as Summer gets closer to Fall, they easily transition from light and bright into early Fall arrangements that are a little deeper in color.

Here are some pics of how I use sunflowers throughout the house from July to October. Let's start in the Dining Room with my large metal basket that is my go-to centerpiece on the dining table. I keep a base of ivy and hydrangeas in the basket and during the year I add in other elements to compliment the seasons. In mid summer the hydrangeas become a little darker and the sunflowers get added in.

I usually keep this large metal Italian basket here as a centerpiece throughout the year. The tabletop French Gray wagon changes throughout the year, but summer usually contains a tureen filled with something like pears and other small seasonal pieces. Sunflowers will always be part of the mix starting in early August.

As late summer gives way to fall, darker hydrangeas and sunflowers get a boost with added colorful autumn leaves. Sunflowers are such a transitional floral element. You can take them from early summer bright colors and patriotic baskets of florals to fall with neutral hydrangeas, foraged leaf branches, and pumpkins.

This was a post from 2013 at one of our previous homes with faux sunflowers in a vintage window box arrangement.

I always keep a faux flower arrangement in the entry, and here's a post from an Early Fall Entry from 2019 using white sunflowers with fall leaves. A Sunflower botanical leans against the mirror with an everchanging seasonal look.

Here's another look at the Entry at our previous home with a small sunflower floral arrangement in a silver coffeepot with an antique English countryside print

As late summer approaches I like to add in some deeper, warm colors, textured fabrics, and lots of Sunflower themed florals and pillows in the Hearth Room. Having a neutral sofa and chair, furniture, and wall color makes it easy to make seasonal and holiday changes during the year. Late summer is the time for sunflower prints and pillows to show up on the mantel and sofa.

The throw pillows change up frequently here and last year I used some Kilim pillow covers with the sunflower pillow covers from Amazon.

I have a wonderful antique wicker florist basket that shows up frequently during the year. Late summer is the time for some variation of a sunflower arrangement, and the family antique white sideboard is the perfect spot for display.

Here's a look at Sunflowers in the late summer with a lighter look of

My August Mantel with a Sunflower Botanical print.
I change up prints frequently throughout the seasons, and maybe even more so from August to November; Fall being my favorite time of the year so it gets added attention.

And another look with a dried sunflower wreath on the mantel.

Another spot where Sunflowers show up is the farmtable in the Garden Room. I have a vintage wooden ice cream bucket that I painted white when we moved here. It's my favorite vessel for a large seasonal bouquet here in the Garden Room. Ticking pairs perfectly with sunflowers for the summer. Here I'm using a piece of indigo ticking fabric as a tablerunner.

Late Summer version...

And the early Fall look on the farm table with a fishing basket, lantern, and a few pumpkins.

Here's a restyling of a pre-made wreath with a little sunflower fun added in on the Garden Room's Holiday Cupboard. It's a great place for a wreath when the doors are closed.

A vintage watering can makes a great vessel
for a mixed sunflower and late summer floral arrangement.

This look is from July of this year after the 4th. The sunflowers hadn't taken over as yet, but you can see with the pillow on the settee that they were getting started.

I like to keep the wicker sitting area in the Garden Room seasonally current. Summertime means bright color including sunflowers from mid July. The bright yellows, golds, and oranges of the sunflowers pair beautifully with so many colors and prints. Here I'm using them with black/white Buffalo checks, ticking pillows, and a gold and white quilted throw on the settee.

I have a favorite huge vintage needlepoint pillow that I found at a flea market years ago. It always comes out in late summer somewhere. I have a very old church pew in the garden room and last year it landed out there. The deep brown background and a small neutral plaid vintage quilt works perfectly with the golds and browns of late summer.

My antique rocking horse is sporting a striped black/white ribbon and black eyed Susan bloom.

A fun way to use Sunflowers in a small space is with small bouquets and vessels. It's easy to get the feeling of late summer/ early fall without overwhelming a space or shelf.

Even dried sunflower heads are gorgeous in the Fall.

  2. So many gorgeous flower arrangments with sunflowers Debra! I had no idea the dried ones were so cool but Iove them. They definitely have their own kind of patina and elegance. I went to 3 stores looking for sunflowers in our part of Florida and they didn't have them yet so I'm hoping in the next few weeks they'll be here. I would love to learn how to dry them too!
