Coastal Vibes with a Seashell Buffet

Hello Everyone, do you love Coastal Design... and Vintage... and Summer? Well, you're in the right place because today a group of us are sharing our Summer Coastal Vibes and how we use all those elements in our decor. Amber, from Follow the Yellow Brick Home  has put this great group together and if you're coming from Christy's at Our Southern Home, Hello and Welcome; so glad you're here!

I have to admit I'm really lacking in coastal decor, since we live in SW Missouri and I'm about as far from any coast as one could get. Guess the lake doesn't qualify. We haven't been to the beach in over 25 years so I'm going with the shells we collected on trips to Texas and Florida coast when the girls were still living at home.

What I'm lacking in Beachiness, I hope to make up for in vintage display! I do love using seashells this time of year, and try to bring them out for a bit in late July and August. I have a few interesting tureens and silver baskets that look so pretty filled with shells and starfish and sea glass. Today I thought I'd round them all up on my Dining Room Buffet and share them with all of you.

I have a lot of old prints, but nothing near "nautical" or "beachy" so I went with a summery look with a beautiful floral botanical. I wanted a container where you could actually see all the pretty shells, so I chose this old scrolly iron plant container on a silver tray.

I have a small commemorative plate of Queen Elizabeth's silver Jubilee with a nautilus shell under a cloche. Can we connect the two things?... no, but they looked pretty displayed together!

On the other side of the buffet I have several altered bottles with shell tops I made back in 2012. Altered bottles were a bit of a trend back then and these were my hack on soldered top bottles. Anything under glass or a cloche elevates the look. You can see that original post here.

A summer stack of fruit themed dessert plates with a small Royal Albert Rose floral creamer.

This old conch shell has an interesting history. When I was growing up it was a door stop of sorts in my childhood home. I don't know anything else about it, but I assume it was found by my parents when they were first married. It's pretty beat up, and old!

Other small collected shells are filling two antique crystal champagne glasses. Do you have a shell collection, but nothing else that screams "Beach" or "Coastal"? Don't be afraid to display your fun and pretty shells in surprise ways!

I posted earlier in the week about the rest of the dining room and my French Country wagon on the table for a Mid Summer Centerpiece. And last week I shared a few earlier posts on Seashell Decor and More.

Thanks so much for coming by and following the Hop. For more great ideas with a Coastal Vibe please head over to Kelly's place at The Tattered Pew. You can also check out the other Hop links below.

  1. Love this vignette so much Debra! I love the way you added the shells to the champagne coup and under the cloches too. They're such great and totally doable ideas. Even though I live on an island and a super short bike ride to the water, I don't have a lot of coastal decor either so I really appreciate how you thoughtfully weaved the season into your home. Big hugs, CoCo

  3. Love your buffet Debra! How fun to have a shell that belonged to your parents. Funny... I remember my mother propping open the kitchen door with a shell from her honeymoon too. I'm always amazed at your knack for conveying the vibes of a season while always staying true to your own beautiful style. Your buffet reminds me of the lazy summer beach days of my childhood. Thank you for that! Have a great weekend!

  4. Such a beautiful buffet! You definitely captured the coastal vibe even though you don't live on the coast. Just the right amount of shells mixed in with your vintage pieces make such a pretty vignette!

  7. I would have had so much fun collecting old shells from vacations along ago and displaying them like you did. Love how they are inside the footed iron piece. So clever. And those bottles with the shells on top are fun. I actually haven't seen anything like that. Love what you've done. Happy Summer!

  8. I have never gotten over my embellished bottles phase and don't plan to anytime soon! I LOVE those bottles! Your shells and the ways you displayed them are stunning. I love the mix of summer flowers with shells. When we move to the beach I simply must have flowers similar to my Kentucky cottage gardens and I love the thought of merging coastal and garden cottage styles. Love the queen cloche too. You made me curious if there could be some connection you could make there...I sent you an email!

The large shells are fabulous. I have many more shells but I was still too tired from vacation to fo as much as I had planned for this hop. Plenty of ideas now for next year and I think I am going to go ahead and schedule this same theme/time for next year so people can plan ahead.

By the way, I also think of lakes with coastal decor. My dad lives in Cleveland and when I was little I visited Lake Erie and I remember wading in the small lapping waves and collecting interesting rocks along the shores. Also there are lighthouses and ships. It all works!

Love this post! Thank you so much for joining.

  10. Really nice display, Debra. I love those bottles you made. I've got a few very large conch shells from trips we've taken, that have some great stories behind how they were obtained and how they made it home. ;)
