Sometimes all it takes to start the transition to another season can be as quick and easy as changing up a few well placed pillows, and pillows are usually the first thing I change up for the season. Late last month I posted 10 Tips to Transition to Fall where I share how I have an easy plan to move into the upcoming season. I know I just shared the Hearth Room in August, but these new pillows and quilt brought a different look and feel to the space.
Early Fall starts for me in late August and hangs around at least until the outside temps reach a place where I can put on a sweater without "sweating", and that we start seeing some leaf change. I don't feel like decorating with heavy mounds of leaves and piles of pumpkins until later on in September. (OK, mid September).
Last month I had a sunflower explosion around the house, which included flower arrangements, prints, and of course some pillow covers. I paired the sunflower pillow covers with my kilim pillow covers and loved it. But when I saw these Buffalo Check pillow covers on Amazon I jumped on them. I love the "light and bright" Fall color combo that picks up the early fall color in the sunflower prints. (Just recently I've read that this color may be referred to as "pimento". And that's exactly the color. Not really orange, but a cross with "salmon",)
I keep the off white matelassé quilts on the sofas...
it makes for easy clean up and no messes
that can't be fixed with a quick wash.
Of course I kept the ticking pillows as companions,
because... well... ticking goes with almost everything!!
It looks like Fall, but doesn't overwhelm me. One of the tips in that earlier post was using the warmer colors of Fall, but in this case in lighter small doses.
And speaking of ticking, I've been looking for a quilted indigo or black ticking throw or quilt for a long time. But I could never find one that had the real look and feel of authentic ticking fabric.
This last summer I got busy about locating something to use in my decor. I even thought about making my own ticking fabric "throw"... for just a hot minute. I found this twin size quilt that fit all my criteria for the authentic look back in August. It's been on backorder for most of the summer, but it finally arrived last week. You can check it out Here.
It arrived just in time for my late summer look in the Hearth Room.
It's here on the slipcovered ottoman for now.
I have plans for it on the sofa and the wicker settee, later.
Since the lighting is less than fabulous here in the hearth room,
I'm taking it out to the garden room for some nice natural light.
I have to open the front door, then add supplemental lighting to even get these shots. I always have to apologize for the pics. I've done a quick early fall mantel refresh in here with a vintage botanical print.
I love this lighter Fall look,
but the darker colors will come out toward the end of September.
I'll share the mantel and rest of the Early Fall Hearth Room soon.
Do you do your Seasons in "steps"?

I love the lighter touch! Everything looks bright, cheery and still summery but I get the almost fall feeling. The pillows and the twin quilt are perfect. And I'm with you on making one yourself. I'd have to be drunk. ;)
ReplyDeleteDebra love it all. Bright cheerful and not heavy colors for fall. I was happy to see more decor coming out for fall in the neutrals that I love. Hope you had a good labor day weekend and happy new week. xoxo
ReplyDeleteIt looks so pretty for early fall! I am getting in a fall mood now for sure so I am getting ready to go through your old posts!
ReplyDeleteLove seeing you getvready for fall. I'm with you for the softer side of fall.
ReplyDeleteIt works in our home.
Debra, it looks inviting. I'm adding a few touches here and there this week. I'm so ready for this season. Love the ticking quilt. Where did you find it? The link isn't working. Thanks for sharing the inspiration.
ReplyDeletethanks for letting me know, Sarah. I think I have it fixed now. It's Red Land Cotton, but they've sold out again with the twin size.
DeleteI couldn’t get the quilt link to work. Anyone else?
ReplyDeleteSo sorry, Yes, I think it's fixed now. Red Land Cotton
DeleteEverything looks so lovely, Debra. That fall pillow looks great on your sofa. I love your ticking you found for your sofa. I have to keep a quilt on my little loveseat in the den as my little dog stays up there so much!
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia :)
I agree, pillows are such a great way to change up a room with the seasons! Your buffalo check goes well with all the sunflowers. I love ticking, too -- blue and white in particular. Any time i see anything vaguely resembling it I buy it! Thanks for sharing at Vintage Charm. Pinned! xo Kathleen
ReplyDeleteLove your new pillow covers, Debra!! I do love buffalo check prints but oddly enough, I only have a couple of red pillows my husband's grandmother made for our wedding gift. I'll have to feature those around Christmas... Enjoy your new pillow covers!!! They look wonderful with the ticking and new ticking quilt! Happy to feature your post tonight at Share Your Style #318. <3
ReplyDeleteFall{ish} hugs,
Barb :)
So pretty Debra! Anything buffalo checked and I'm all in! Your pictures are beautiful. Getting a good shot is a constant struggle for me. Lighting was not something I was worried about years ago when we bought this place. It is sure frustrating for me these days though! My subscribers are so gracious putting up with my pictures so I feel blessed there. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteLove the pillows...going to try them! I like to do a little bit of Fall in early September....then gradually add more as the month goes on. I bought a Van Gogh sunflower pillow cover at the Van Gogh exhibit in Philadelphiaand I think it needs one of the buffalo pillows to keep it company!
