I'm here in the Dining Room today,
adding a few late-summer sunflowers
adding a few late-summer sunflowers
to the table and buffet bringing a little pre-harvest color.
The Dining Room is one of those places where a few seasonal changes take place,
but they are usually more subtle. The first thing I change up is always the runner
on the big dark wood table. I realized when we first purchased it
that I was going to struggle to overcome the massive darkness.
I've had to constantly keep the tabletop covered
with a lighter fabric so all that dark wood is not overwhelming.
...same with the chairs.
I had custom chair slipcovers made for them back in 2012.
Those made a beautiful difference with the whole look and feel of the room.
I've been keeping my metal Italian basket on the table for many years. It's large enough to make a statement and can be seen over the slipcovered chairs. Ivy and hydrangeas are the basics, then I usually add a few flowers, branches, or leaves to make it seasonal.
When I took out the French pottery from the Holiday Cupboard last month
I was just seeing pastel flowers and a springy-summer look.
I displayed the tea set in a tray and then moved it here to the Dining Room table.
Basically I wasn't sure what to do with it so it landed here "temporarily".
I was really surprised how well the pottery complimented this gray floral fabric.
The golds, creams and coral colors picked up the golds and deep reds in the pottery.
So it has stayed for a bit.
A sunflower botanical print is attached with a few pieces of scotch-tape
to an old "foxed" canvas. It's just propped up against the antique triptych mirror.
I added a late summer tussy mussy in one of my small iron urns
under a cloche and a few pears scattered around.
These two sheep are usually found somewhere here in the Dining Room.
One of my heavier tureen bases is full of late summer pears.
Too soon for pumpkins, but pears and apples are perfect for late summer.
My little antique wire plant stand doesn't take up much space,
so it's perfect here where it's a tight fit.
I love paperwhites and use them throughout the year.
I have kept a vase and urn filled with the faux bunches
for a quick change up.
My little family washstand is tucked in here in the corner
with another vintage sunflower botanical print.
I don't think I'd ever even looked up the mark on the bottom
of my sweet pottery lamb tureen; Olfaire Portuguese Pottery.
They are a Portuguese company that makes modern day Majolica.
Lamby is nestled in a woodsy moss and twig wreath on an ironstone platter.
Let me know what you all are up to.
Hope you'll come by Monday evening.

Your table looks lovely with the large arrangement of sunflowers and hydrangeas Debra, with the pretty tea tray and tureen of colorful pears. I love to use sunflowers for late summer decorating, such a warm and happy pop of color!

I adore your late summer sunflowers! I am also making some late summer changes with sunflowers this week.
ReplyDeleteI love your dark wood dining room furniture contrasted with your lighter overall decor. You have come up with clever ways of lightening up the table and chairs without losing the traditional beauty of the table.
Don't you love when your china patterns take on completely different looks for different seasons depending what the china is displayed with? The French dishes looked beautiful for spring but I am loving them in this late summer decor.
My potted flowers and herbs ended up not being able to take the late July and early August heat and I didn't feel up to watering any of the past 10 days or so and that really did them in. I am ready to empty all the pots and just wait for mums and pansies.
Everything Beautiful as always!
Thankyou friend! Toward the end of August the plants all start to fade and look worn out. I love putting it all together but hate to have to dump them all in the trash. I love getting the mums potted for Fall, but I've never done pansies. September will be here before we know it!!
DeleteLove the late summer flowers. Sunflowers are one of my faves. Have a great evening. Hugs Kris.
ReplyDeleteYour sheep are fabulous. I love your sunflower prints. It's looking fun and festive.
ReplyDeleteAlways love to see your centerpieces and darling vignettes--they are so inspiring! Right now my dining room table needs some decorating--thanks for all your ideas!
ReplyDeleteYou have a beautiful dining room. To me, it's huge! Each table and display are perfectly decorated and your little lambs are darling. Great idea to have the chairs slip-covered. They still look so nice even after so many years. Love it all!
ReplyDeleteLove your dining room chair covers! The extra long ruffle is perfect, and looks more traditional than 'feminine' if you know what I mean. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty!! It's perfect decor for this time of year! Thanks for sharing at Charming Homes & Gardens! ~ Kristin | White Arrows Home
ReplyDeleteLove everything about your dining room - especially the flowered pottery - tea set you put out on the dining table - it goes in spring or fall - it's just lovely! I have a black wood table that I bought at an antique store a few years ago & I love it - I have found it very easy to decorate with!
ReplyDeleteYour floral arrangement is absolutely gorgeous! The tea set and table runner colors are perfect together.
ReplyDeleteI hear you about the dark wood. You've tackled that problem like a champ -- your dining room is gorgeous! The tea set really does go well with the beautiful runner. You've added just the right touches for this time of year (I'm loving the sunflower look myself -- I actually grew some this year!) Squirrels can really be a problem, can't they? We gave up on bird feeders years ago because of them:( And we desperately need rain! Thanks for sharing at Vintage Charm. xo Kathleen
