January Cupboard in Candlelight

For me, January is a month for settling in for Winter. Here in the lower Midwest we do have a few beautiful warmer days during Winter, but for the most part the days are gray and cold and spitting something wet. In January I'm all about staying warm and cozy indoors. To combat the short dreary days I like to have some spaces in the house that evoke a feeling of warmth and comfort.

Before we know it this New Year month will be gone and Valentine's Day will be knocking on our "decor door". I want to enjoy January for what it is, which is a time to retreat indoors for coziness. My Holiday Cupboard in the Garden Room has become a place to celebrate the seasons with vintage dishes, books, and sentimental items.

During the Christmas season I brought out the Red Transferware,
but now that I'm back to neutrals, the Brown is showing up again.

The shelves's basic layout stays the same but some of the individual items are part of the change up. A few smaller ironstone tureens and pitchers are staples here, and I'm still using some winter greenery here and there. Small evergreen trees easily fit into the larger ironstone pitchers.

My two vintage Winter prints are still here, since they feature snowy scenes.
The Currier and Ives Homestead print and one of a country church covered in snow.

My collection of Brown Transferware is a mish-mash of odds and ends.
Mixing it up with patterns makes it interesting and fun,
and a lot easier to find pieces to display.

The top of this cabinet is plain and flat,
but I added another curvy wooden header piece to give it a little more interest.

Since I had a few small prints out, I added a very old framed German postcard from someones long ago trip to Jerusalem. There was a personal penned notation on the front to the recipient.

As the afternoon moves on to evening I added votive candles
to a few of the smaller ironstone mini creamers.

Old clay seedling pots filled with moss and pinecones bring in some texture.

Did you catch the Cozy Winter Homes Tour?

More January change ups in the Garden Room next time.

Hope to see you Monday evening,

  2. Debra,
Here on my portion of the Prairie, we are experiencing one of those gray,
wet days you describe in this post.
I love the prints that you bring into your vignettes on each shelf!
The Old Homestead in Winter truly sets the 'tone' of your design choices!
I'm re~organizing the mechanical storage portion of our lower level
and have not, yet,had a chance to design any vignettes within Studio One.
    Thank you for always inspiring!

  4. Just beautiful. I love the little pots especially. I must always have little pots out year round as a nod to the garden. Yours look perfect with just a bit of moss and pine cones. The old prints and transferware are fabulous!

  8. I just bought 8 plates to go with your platter on the top shelf. I can't wait to use them this spring. I love all your wonderful brown and white transferware. The Finlandia in brown is adorable. I have some like it in blue and white. You have a great collection of winter prints.
