I'm very fortunate to have a long wall in the Hearth Room that can handle multiple pieces of furniture, and I've made use of it to bring back two vintage pieces I've had for years. I didn't know how they would look together, but I realized I'd need something of a different size and texture to go between the two.
I haven't been able to use either of these pieces for years, and I'm really enjoying having them around for storage and decorating. I tried several different things, and decided I'd try out a basket stack again.
Once upon a house, I used a stack of baskets in the hallway next to the stairway. They were natural color and a mix of wicker lunch hampers about 4 feet high sitting on a little bench.
(hallway baskets in my first blogging house)
I thought I'd give that idea a try again, but I'd sold a few of them so I rounded up the ones I had and painted the top two white. The larger bottom basket had been painted a light gray that my husband had used next to his recliner. It needed to be lightened up.
And speaking of the old sideboard, I've added a couple of vintage elements to the mix here. This is a Beech Nut Biscuit Tin from the 20's showing historic buildings from the Mohawk Valley. Evidently the handle had either been added on, or at one time the tins had been made with a handle. It had been red, but now it's a taupe. (when I have a paintbrush out, nothing is safe) This is one of those vintage pieces that I don't think I've ever shared here on the blog.
Another piece is this original print and frame, don't know the exact age. I'm pretty sure the black frame is Eastlake, so that would make them probably from the 1890's. I replaced the original glass which had been broken, so it was a real bargain. Right now it's just sitting on the top shelf; hopefully we'll get to hang some artwork soon, then it will be right above the sideboard.
We're still working on the previous house, trying to get it ready to put on the market. I spent the entire weekend painting the master bathroom cabinetry. A window with strong morning sun had ruined the finish on the vanity over the years. We had tried many products to rejuvenate the wood, but it was in bad shape, so paint was the best looking option. It wasn't a fun weekend, but we got a lot accomplished.
Spring is really dragging it's little feet around here. I did notice that we have a smallish Forsythia bush along the back of our yard, so I'm hoping those sweet little yellow blooms will fill out a little better. I think it has been pruned too much, so I won't be cutting it back for several seasons. The yard needs a lot of help and cleanup. There seems to be way too many Hostas and ornamental grasses for my liking. I'm going to have to do some searching for alternative plantings because it needs variety. I need some warmer weather around here because I'm ready to stop wearing long underwear!

Hi Debra,
ReplyDeleteOf course I love that you painted the baskets white! You know me and painting things white. They look great stacked and they do give texture and fit in that space perfectly. Happy Wednesday.
Hugs,
Kris
Darling ! Love your decor !

ReplyDeleteI love seeing some collectables that we haven't seen before. I'm sorry your over working at the old house. I bet that's not as fun as working on the new one. Spring is here. Hopefully your yard will begin to show some signs of it. Send some of those hostas my way, please. :0
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh, there is a sea of them! I like a few, but this is overkill, haha!
DeleteDebra,
ReplyDeleteLove the texture and functionality of the stacked baskets!
You amaze me with all that you're accomplishing!
I'm hoping the forsythia bush blooms for you. . .
and that it realizes the beauty it brings to your heart and soul!
Keep those updates coming as your lovely new home takes shape.
Pat
thankyou, Pat. I've surprised myself at all the work I've been able to do, considering last summer being so scary, healthwise. I DO love forsythia, it's my favorite Spring shrub!
DeleteI love piece on the left with the mirror; I am sure it has a name, but I can't seem to think of it right now! The painted baskets in the middle provide a nice rhythm of color and texture between the two pieces. I am so happy you are able to use them again. Loved pieces are like loved friends.
