How many of us have seen a fabulous bargain of an old sofa, chair or settee at a garage sale or flea market and marveled at the bones of the piece but just couldn't "get there" in making a purchase because of the amount of money/and or time it would take to see it come out as we've envisioned?
Well, we're starting to see a trend in technique for actually painting the fabric, as in this wonderful tufted sofa from Gua at Hviter Lakkris. The tufting alone would have scared me away!!
This is how it started out...
Or take a look at this pristine beauty from Glory B's Cottage
Can someone say 1980's?
That brings me back to a post I did a couple of weeks ago
where I shared this amazing sofa in Traditional Home Magazine.
I love trends,
but don't want to invest a lot of money into them
or to changing out upholstery because you're tired of it.
My rule is "don't buy pattern...buy neutrals" for the big things.
That way you can change out pillows and accessories for a fresh new look.
I broke that rule on a sofa purchase a while back,
and now it's covered in a white slipcover.
So instead of investing in upholstery for this kind of trend,
why not just paint it?
And along the lines of the Union Jack,
I think I'd opt for a more toned down version,
say this...
or in grays...
which brings me to this wonderful French gilt set
that I recently saw at Relics.
Still pricey, but totally gorgeous.
The sofa is worn, but the chairs are in pretty good shape...
Personally, I think it's fabulous just like this.
Just thinking of the "idea" of painting a piece.
Right now I'm just "dreaming", but you just never know what I might do!
So the next time you see an iffy sofa, try to imagine it painted!
So that brings me to a few of last week's features:
Lisa from Budget Design Girl shared a post about the Union Jack in design that is coinciding with the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth. THIS I could go for!
Amanda Marie from Little City Homestead, a new blogger, posted about an adorable little watering can with the perfect "chippy" quotient!
Melissa from Daisy Mae Belle, (also a new blogger)has two things that I love (and have), a rusty fence gate and a birdhouse! Isn't this a great entry statement?
And in honor of Father's Day, I want to share this wonderful Model A Ford from Faye at Wild Rose Vintage. My daddy collected antique cars, and I grew up having a real love for them.
brings back wonderful memories!
So let's see what kind of inspiration you've been kicking around this week. Please have a link within your post to be featured!
and please go visit these other great Friday party gals:

Debra,
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting...love that old gate in her foyer. Have a great time with Anne.
Blessings,

The old adage “they don’t make ‘em like they used to”, is appropriate when contemplating reupholstering your furniture. If you’ve had a sofa or chair for several years, or it has been passed down to you from a loved one, it is clearly going to last just as long if it’s properly restored.

Thanks for hosting, Debra!
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting the party. Enjoy your time with Anne.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of painting the furniture! Great idea to give it new life! Thank you for hosting and for joining me at Home Sweet Home!

About 15 yrs ago a girlfriend of mine painted her sofa...we all thought it was a crazy idea but obviously she was ahead of her time....she also had her carpet dyed! I love the idea and am going to keep that in mind now! Thanks for hosting and have the VERY BEST time with your friend!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Lorraine
I have a sofa that's in need of some help, I wonder how painting it would work out? Hmmmm...something to think about. Hope you and Anne are having fun :)
ReplyDeleteOne of these days I will get up the nerve to paint a chair I have. Thanks for hosting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting Debra. Have a fabulous weekend.
ReplyDeleteHi Debra,
ReplyDeleteI've seen painted upholstery but no one ever mentions how well it holds up. Do you know if you can sit on it without the paint chipping or scratching off the fabric? Or cracking where you sit? Or what about if you spill water or food on it? I really like the idea but don't know how functional it would be. Thanks for hosting and enjoy your trip!
I can just imagine you and Anne talking ninety miles a minute and feeling as if you were meeting again just like you did last month. Thanks for hosting.
ReplyDeleteLovely post, as usual. I hope you're having a great time with your blogging friends and finding some super-duper items to show us too. Blessings.
ReplyDeleteLove the painted upholstery! Such a great idea and so much cheaper than re-upholstering or buying new. Hope you're having a great time! Thanks for hosting even when you're away:-)
ReplyDeleteI know you two must just be having a blast! Many thanks for hosting Debra. Have you seen my post on painting the upholstery of a chair? I think the post was called "the other French chair". I loved how it turned out. It sure will make me look twice when I see a great chair that I don't think I can reupholster.
ReplyDeleteOh, my! Painted upholstery...love the idea....Just might have to try this! Thanks for hosting such a great party!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Debra, I am in the process of painting the upholstery on two chairs. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
ReplyDeleteDebra, Thanks for hosting a fun party. Love your post and the features are so creative... Have a wonderful weekend!

So glad you and Anne are having a nice visit. I've painted upholstery many times. It's not as scary as it seems. Love your examples.
ReplyDeleteDebra, you always know what we'll love to gaze and emulate. Thanks for all the great inspiration and for taking the time to host the party.

Paint my sofa? Hmmm...great idea! Love the features! Thanks so much for hosting each week!...hugs...Debbie
ReplyDeleteDebra,
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea! Can you tell me though what type of paint would be used for this?? Goodness, this could open up a whole new world for some of us. Thanks for sharing. :)
Blessings & hugs,
Karen
thanks much for hosting! painted huh very interesting. hope you have a great rest of your week!
ReplyDeleteI have a floral couch (yes it is now slipcovered) but painting it is an interesting idea. Great post thanks for hosting, Laura
ReplyDeleteThank you for featuring my hubby's Model A Ford! It's fun to see it over here! (He thanks you too) I get a kick out of painting the fabric on the furniture, I painted 3 dress form pin cushions awhile back because I didn't like the fabric nor did I want to try to recover them. I've played with fabric painting for art quilts in the past so I thought...why not paint the dress forms with fabric paint! I was surprised at how well they turned out so I can totally see doing this with furniture, sorry I passed up so many pieces in the past! Love that garden gate too! Thanks again!

I am going to tell you what I overheard a very stressed mom tell her rowdy kids in a store when I was a teenager -- Loudly, she said, "I only have two words for you...BeHave!!! Can;t tell ya how many times my family has used this on each other! I know y'all are having a ball!
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting
Rhonda
Have a great time with Anne - I know you girls will!
ReplyDelete(I love that first painted tufted couch!)
Thanks so much for hosting - I am dying to try that furniture paint!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Suzan
I have a chair that's too complicated for me to reupholster, so I was going to make a slipcover for it. But you've got me seriously considering painting it. If it doesn't work out well, I can go ahead and cover it anyway. Thanks for the inspiration! And thanks for hosting your party. Hope you're having a great time.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting. I just experienced my first painted upholstery project, it happens to be what I'm sharing today. Love the union jack idea.

Debra,Thank you for hosting each week :) Just noticed I linked up the same blog post twice. Feel free to remove #125! I tried, but it decided to stay! Normally the linky parties don't allow us to link up the same post, but today I've had all sorts of troubles lol Typing on a borrowed laptop because my computer monitor decided to stop working this morning Aaagghhh :) Greetings from Australia /Pernilla
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful inspiring post:) Enjoy your time with dear sweet Anne! I am SO jealous:) Have a blessed day dear friend, HUGS!
ReplyDeleteThat first settee is causing my heart to stop! Oh how I would love to see that in my home. Amazing. I shared an interview at my blog yesterday with a cute lady who does CeC Cadlwell's paint videos on YouTube. She has an antique sette and she painted it pink! I have done it with small pieces, but I am tempted to try in on the large ones, those that I spent practically no money on. Great post, great features. Have a lovely weekend. -K
ReplyDeleteDebra-
ReplyDeleteWow, I don't know if I'd be ready to take on a painted upholstery project! They look so cool, though! I'll have to look for the perfect piece. Thank you for hosting, and have a ball w/ Anne!
This Painted Upholstery Trend is something I'm considering since I don't have the funds for slipcovers or re-upholstering some fav furniture that the G-Kid Force and Animals have soiled over the years and which I can't get clean anymore. I drape everything with Exotic Fabrics but they don't stay put while the furniture is in use so this might be just the solution I need?!? Is there a specialty paint that is used or suggested... or just any paint will do? Thanks for Hosting yet another great Linky Party, its always such fun to participate.

ReplyDeleteWOW! Debra! That was a fantastic post. How do you paint fabric? Can you use just regular spray paint? I'm learning new things everyday in this blogosphere. Hope you have fun with your visiting friend!!! What is this party thing - I think I'll put my new desk (was a table) on next week. I'm revealing it on Monday on my site. Come see it!!
ReplyDeleteI am have a fabulous time reading of your adventures and finds. Thank you for hosting, hugs- Tanya :)
ReplyDeleteDebra,

I was at an estate sale about 4 years ago and saw this gorgeous white on white chair. I almost killed myself trying to get to it and when I did...it was painted...every stinkin' bit of it. The funny thing is whoever did the painting didn't bother taking the cushion out...it was icky green underneath...lol!
ReplyDeleteIn case you're wondering...of course I bought it. Who can pass up ingenuity?
BTW...y'all sure look like y'all are having the time of your lives!
XO
