Vintage Baskets for Every Season

Hello friends, Welcome to our bimonthly gathering of vintage loving décor peeps. This is where we share how we use vintage pieces and collectibles in our home decorating. Coming from parents who were antiquing nuts and myself buying and selling vintage and antique pieces for my whole adult life, I come by incorporating old pieces into my home spaces as a way of life.

Thanks to Cindy from County Road 407 for being our intrepid leader as we wander through basketland today. 

This time we're talking about baskets of all shapes and sizes; wood, wire, wicker etc. I think baskets are a basic vintage collectible and I know that many of us find them as staples in our homes. I told Cindy that I had baskets coming out of my ears, but I promise not to show you all of them; mostly my favorite and most used ones.

This split oak rolling market basket is one of my very favorite (and biggest) pieces. I had been wanting one for years but hadn't seen one that was affordable. But a friend of mine who was also a dealer at a vintage boutique where I had a space was gracious enough to trade this piece for a rare large wicker florist basket that I had found. win-win. 

I usually have it filled with hydrangeas as a base, then add in sunflowers in summer, colorful dried leaf branches in fall, and evergreen branches and holly for Christmas and winter. I have it in the entry for photos, but it usually hangs out next to the TV armoire.

Baskets as Floral Containers

There are so many ways to display flowers, but one of my favorites and most used, is placing faux florals in old baskets.

Baskets as Centerpieces

I have two larger tables, that both need bigger centerpieces. Since it's usually just the two of us, a centerpiece can sit undisturbed.

A Season of Thanks Basket Centerpiece

This old walnut stained split oak basket with handles can be used for a centerpiece and also used to store blankets. This time it's in the Dining Room filled with pumpkins for fall and Thanksgiving. It's lined with a vintage Belgium tapestry. 

Here, another Christmas season it was on the Garden Room farmtable where my old goose decoy was nesting. Also notice the large laundry/gathering basket on top of the kitchen china cabinet.

Metal Vintage Baskets

We don't often think of baskets made of metal but here are a few I've found. This next one is a funeral basket. 

Bountiful Vintage Fall Baskets

This next metal basket isn't vintage; but based on an antique Italian design. It resides on my dining room table throughout the seasons and holidays. It was black when I purchased it, but I painted it French Gray after a few years so the florals would show up better.

I especially love these metal utility baskets because they allow us to see the fun contents. I have several vintage gym lockers that I keep magazines in, too. Old refrigerators used to use metal baskets for food compartments.

This old metal shopping basket with handles(below) was my in-laws when they owned a small grocery store. Wire baskets are always great with showcasing vintage garden décor.

Rolling Market Basket with Sunflowers

This is a post from our last home with this same basket in the dining room.

As you can see I have a lot of baskets and several large armoires and cupboards. If I have space, I like placing something on top of the cupboard and my larger baskets are perfect for that extra décor spot.

At our previous home we had 11 foot ceilings and even though I have larger furniture pieces they looked dwarfed by these huge ceiling heights. My kitchen china cabinet in the sitting room was a place I kept this larger gray washed vintage laundry basket for décor.

Now, at this house I use the large gray-wash basket on top of the Holiday Cupboard in the Garden Room. Here's another white wired basket filled with vintage clay pots on the step stool.

Thanksgiving to Christmas Hearth Room

I have several reproduction metal olive baskets; one of them is here holding a small Christmas tree. If you look closely you can see six baskets I'm using in this one Christmas Hearth Room photo.

I've had problems with birds nesting in this woven door basket at this house, but since I put out a nesting box on the front porch I haven't had much trouble. I use a Command Hook on the glass storm door to hang the basket. It's better than a wreath here because we live further back from the street, so it's easier to see.
