Hurray for the Red, White and Blue in the Cupboard

When June rolls around it's time to restyle the Cupboard with a patriotic theme. I like to give it a Summer refresh where I can add in some mini flags and and small bits of patriotic ephemera when it's close to July 4th. I don't have a lot of actual patriotic pieces, but rely on vintage china and pottery that reflect summer and our patriotic summer holidays with color.

When I restyle the cupboard I try to get down to the basics with white dishes and pottery. For summer I then add in pieces of red transferware, my French Faience in summery florals, white ironstone pitchers, and a few pieces of Quimper ware from Portugal.

Last year I found a few blue transferware saucers and bread plates so they are stacked under the vintage Bluebird cups. Over the years I bought and sold a few pieces of Bluebird China, but just like Santa mugs, I could kick myself for ever letting any of it out of my hot little hands. I managed to find these two mismatched cups years ago and enjoy displaying them in the summer months.

Two smallish white creamers have a mini flag display on the top shelf. Patriotic ephemera, including my favorite vintage postcards, are definitely hard to find in my area.

I have a soft spot for vintage cottageware sugar and creamers. This adorable set of "pink" ones are a favorite from Japan from the 40's.

I have a few teapots and pitchers, and a favorite Quimper cache pot on the upper shelf on the left.

Vintage clay pots in red and blue decorate the old chippy step stool.

  2. Having beautiful summer weather?! Um, nope. If we could have summer days with no humidity, I'd be totally on board but that's not happening. I love your hutch decor! Your dishes and little details are perfect. I even saw some transferware I hadn't seen before. Not just the new blue and white saucers. Could just be that they look different because of how you styled them. Whatever it is, it's darling!

    1. Thanks Cindy, that's me... forever changing things around. I appreciate your eye for detail!!! We've had so much rain this spring it's totally crazy. Today is sunny and 78. wow a miracle. Summer can be so dry and hot here, and then those days in August when it feels like a hot wet blanket is smothering you when you walk outside. Summer is not my favorite season!
