Vintage Architectual Element on the Fall Mantel

Now that September has arrived and the official start to Fall is just a week away, it was time to bring out small touches of Autumn on the mantel. I've mentioned before that mantels are always a challenge for me. I strive for that "Goldilocks" look.

I found this bright and colorful simple faux fall leaf wreath a few years ago and it works so well here in the hearth room during early fall. This room is without direct sunlight so it tends to be hard to photo, but this bright and colorful piece really brightens things up.

The vintage "frenchy" mirror helps bounce light around this space. It stays on the brick wall behind the mantel and I just work around it with layers and additional elements. But it always seems that hanging a wreath or a print in front leaves a spatial gap which often looks awkward...

At my first blogging house I was actively buying and selling vintage goodies so I had access to all kinds of wonderful vintage décor pieces. I fell in love with old architectural pieces and dismantled furniture pieces and they found their way into my décor. I had high ceilings and lots of wall space at that first place, so there was usually space to incorporate unusual finds.

Miraculously a few of those pieces have survived other moves and made it to our current home, but somehow got sidelined in the garage. Our ceilings are lower here and not as much wall space, so I've been scratching my head over what to do with them for the last 5 years. 

Finally, I thought that I'd just try one of them layered in front of the mirror to help cover up that weird gap. No nail holes; no commitment!

Time for a few pumpkins to come out and party. I made a trip out and about last week to the big craft stores and grabbed a bag of fall potpourri. This one was filled with dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, pinecones, and faux pumpkin thingies soaked in scent. Such a great "bowl filler" for an old Harker ironstone mixing bowl on the coffee table/ bench in the hearth room.

I still have my gold floral quilted throw on the sofa, but changed out my sunflower pillow cover for a more fall look. As we head into mid September, quilts and pillows will change up for a more fall look with darker colors of brown, dark greens, and rust. Fall décor changes fast around here!

Last week I shared my old wicker basket with straw florals on the sideboard. I've had that basket for years and it's held something every season. It makes for great seasonal display on the sideboard.
