Cottage ReView: Botanical Calendar Art on the Fall Buffet

Hello my friends, today on the Cottage Review I'm sharing a post from our previous home's dining room, styling my buffet for fall. At our current house our buffet is under a lovely English Country paned window, and although it's a pretty setting it's not practical for photo taking. Our last house had the "Frenchy mantel mirror" above it, and it was the perfect spot for decorating.

I've been trying to spread out my Fall decorating over the last few weeks. It's given me a chance to try out a few different ideas, and also taken the pressure off to get it all done in a couple of days. I used to make myself and my husband crazy by going into a marathon decor frenzy. Now I'm taking my time and looking for inspiration from Pinterest and Fall Magazines from my many year stash.

I've been buying Cavallini Calendars for years, as they are perfect for framing after you have turned the page. My favorite recently has been their Botanical Wall Calendar, since they are reproduction vintage illustrations printed on heavy matte card stock. I've used them in décor several times, most recently in one of my Summer Cloches with Sunflowers.

This is from my 2017 Calendar, and I think it's perfect for September, since it's an Hydrangea in a soft cream and gray. I needed it to be in a larger frame or something that would give it the ability to stand above the pumpkin arrangement that is centered on the Buffet. I considered just taping it to the mirror, but found this old art canvas instead. I thought this might give me the light background the print needed, and also has the vintage texture that I was looking for.

I loved the "foxing" that is on the bottom of the canvas, just like you'd find on the pages of old books.

I propped the canvas up on the lip of the basin, so it would have just the right height.

This Spring I was using one of my French Faience round platters as a base for my largest cloche, but since it is in Spring colors of blues, mauves, and greens, I looked around for something that had a bit  more of a Fall feel. This Staffordshire Historic Castle Platter has been in my Kitchen China Cupboard and was ready to be put to use. It's pretty large so it was a perfect fit for the cloche.

I used an old book stash as the base for my nest, and added a Baby Boo Pumpkin with some preserved Fall leaves for a Autumn feel.

The smaller cloche is on a milkglass cakestand with a woody moss basket, and a Velvet Pear from my friend Becky from Flax and Willow, previously Timewashed.

Sorry for the glare on the glass of the cloche...

Late in August I found some wonderful moss pumpkins from Grandinroad and just had to start using them. I had had them on the French Wagon on the Dining Room Table, but decided I'd try them in a mix with Velvet Pumpkins in my wonderful old Royal Doulton Pomegranate Bursalem Basin. The colors of this old basin are perfect for Fall with rusts, reds, and a dark turquoise blue.

Twigs, faux Hydrangeas in Rusty reds and greens, and Fall leaves, are mixed with the grouping of Pumpkins.

I'm sure as it progresses into Fall; October and November, I'll change this up. But for now the Hydrangea Print gives it a lighter, more neutral look.

  2. Debra I always love your style as it is so similar to mine. I had to laugh as your sideboard is the same granite top as two tables I use as side tables but we’re actually night tables to a gigantic bed. I got them because the granite had some chips on the back. No one ever sees the chips as I always have vignettes plants or some decor on them and they are such beautiful high end furniture! I use them to store my tablecloths napkins placemats and candles.
Thank you for sharing I was just fussing with a decor under a glass dome yesterday and had a paper mache mushroom, velvet acorns faux pumpkin but it was missing something. Now I know some Spanish moss. I used a wooden slice as a base as bc I’m trying to go for a more natural look on this window display.
I go for more formal in the dining room and mantle. Hmmm going to look for more glass domes!!! Lol!

  3. Debra your buffet looks so wonderful, the cloches are a nice touch. Really like the moss pumpkins and the floral print fits, right into the grouping so nicely.

  4. What a beautiful and inspiring post! Your attention to detail truly shines through in every element of your fall buffet décor. I love how you’ve taken your time to thoughtfully curate each piece, blending vintage charm with seasonal touches. The use of the Botanical Wall Calendar is such a creative idea, and the Hydrangea print paired with the pumpkin arrangement looks stunning. Your ability to mix textures, like the vintage canvas and the moss pumpkins, adds so much warmth and character to the space. Thank you for sharing your process and ideas—it’s given me so much inspiration for my own fall decorating!
