Cottage ReView: The Late-Summer Baker's Rack

Hello friends! Today I'm sharing a mash-up of some of my previous posts from the late summer Baker's Rack. August is the time of year I bring out all the pieces that evoke the wind-down of summer with a harvest feel. You'll see some of the same pieces styled in a bit different way, but they all have a vintage garden theme with lots of late season color with golds, greens, oranges deep reds and a bit of brown.

The rest of the Garden Room has had an early Fall refresh with quilts,  pillows and floral arrangements using the same colors scheme. In August there is always a liberal use of Sunflowers,  Daisies, and Blackeyed Susans. 

I'm using some of my Majolica pieces in the Holiday Cupboard, and the rest of my hodge podge collection is being used here. A few pieces are the real deal, other pieces are reproduction pieces from the 50's. It all comes together with that woodsy vibe.

A few bits of black are appearing as accents like in the frame of the French Lamb, and the hand painted vintage tole tray on the lower shelf.

I'm still using the French faience in the Holiday Cupboard, but I have the teapot, sugar and creamer here in front of the tray. Another vintage pitcher is holding some late summer flowers with black eyed susans, marigolds, and some hydrangeas. Sunflower tussy mussies dot the décor this time of year.

The quilts in golds and florals, and pillows reflect my love of Sunflowers, especially in early Fall. 

My little French Garden Girl lamp that I painted white a year or so ago, stays here on the baker's rack. The wiring is old so I don't leave it on  when I'm not here. Re-wiring it on my list of things to do.

I also have a few of my bee skeps out.

I mentioned earlier that I've found a few Sunflower pillow covers on Amazon, and it's been fun spreading them around the house.

August is the month I think about the harvest in the garden from when I was growing up. And memories of a farm stand at the edge of town with fresh corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, and watermelons... all sorts of produce fresh from the fields. Often there was still a little dirt still hanging around. So thinking about the summer fruit harvest this month, the Baker's Rack is all about Summer Fruit  ...

I brought out all the vintage pieces with a fruit motif and gathered them here in the Garden Room. It's a bright and colorful display with reds and golds in abundance.

On the top shelf is a hand painted piece from the 90's of Ancora Italian Pottery. It's a pitcher that I always enjoy bringing out in Summer. On the right side of the shelf is a blue "windmill" salt glazed piece of crockery that was my paternal grandmother's. 

The wooden "seed" box has a vintage fruit basket piece of wall decor made of chalkware probably from the 30's and a small "grape" teapot. I love finding vintage advertising pamphlets and have a few of them here. I think this one is from the 70's. They usually have interesting recipes and colorful photos. 

Two vintage pieces of crockery are on the left and a vintage birdhouse with a red roof. Need a little red in late summer.

My maternal grandmother's Hull Apple stove set always shows up in the summertime.

Since I was using a fruit theme, I brought out 2 appliqued tea towels with apples, strawberries and peaches. I just love tea towels and always leave one or two out for the season. They were a staple in the kitchen before dishwashers. Any of you remember drying dishes by hand? I know that dates me, but growing up in an old farmhouse, I didn't use a dishwasher until after I was married at our second house.

My paper mache very old goose decoy is nesting here on the bottom shelf. It's usually out for Christmas, but somehow managed to hide out here in the basket.

This old red/white metal flour cannister is holding one of my ivy plants. I'd love to have the complete set, but I've only seen one other piece and it was terribly scratched. This one will have to do.

This little Majolica apple canister doesn't have a mark on the bottom, 

but it's not home-made ceramic because I've seen these in multiple.

The Holiday Cupboard for late-summer.

    

Here's a post from our previous home in August... If you've been with me for awhile you'll remember this kitchen and small sitting area. It was a small space but so fun to decorate for the seasons.

I love this quilt that my Mother-in-Law made years ago,

this Grandmother's Flower Basket, in lots of bright summery colors.

It's best folded on a chair, otherwise we have to wear sunglasses in the kitchen.

Don't you love the baby chicks on the feed sack graphic?
