Vintage Cottage Weekend with Cozy Wool Blankets

Hello Friends, I'm so glad you came by today, because my good friend Amber from Follow the Yellow Brick Home and I are sharing a post with our Vintage Cottage Weekend series. Be sure and click over at the end of the post and see how Amber is sharing her vintage dish collections.

Now that we're past our second full week of January, most of us have settled on a happy balance of cozy and comfy. I know I've put away almost all of the obvious "Christmas-y" decor, including most of the holiday red items. (whoops, the bare, lighted tree is still out, though)

I tend to lean toward more neutral colors in January to sort of clear my visual palate. I've left out the faux evergreen and holly, and anything that pertains to winter and I've spread around lots of cuddly warm blankets and throws. But... I made a concession in the hearth room and brought in some rusty red toile pillows that go with some of my wool blankets and Tartan plaids.

Last year I was looking through some Scottish blanket websites for neutral Tartan plaids and found that there was a Tartan plaid that was extremely close to the traditional signature Burberry plaid. I have a bit of an obsession with anything Burberry, but since prices on everything have gone through the roof, I was looking for a "look-a-like" and not a mortgage priced original.

This plaid has a slightly darker background in camel, instead of the lighter beige of the original Burberry, otherwise it's very comparable. I shopped around and located this Thom(p)son Tartan plaid from an authentic Scottish shop. They have a wonderful selection of Tartans at good prices.

last year's styling in the Hearth Room

Last year, before I settled on the Hearth Room, I styled the new wool throw on my guest bedroom queen sized (early 2000's dated) bed. I'm not a frilly, ruffle-y type of bedroom person, but I like a more tailored look with an English Country feel. I found the Bosporous Toile Euro Shams and small brown floral needlepoint pillow at a vintage market.

Back in the Hearth Room this year, the Thomson Tartan is on the slipcovered sofa. I love these red toile pillows, but don't get an opportunity to use them often. I think they look wonderful with the brown plaids with accents of red.

I found this large and heavy vintage floral needlepoint pillow years ago while out vintage shopping. Brown is predominant in late fall but makes a reappearance after Christmas in winter.

Seeing these toile pillows on the sofa shows that they're more of a reddish brown rather than a Christmasy Red.

I bought this brown wool Pendleton blanket new a few years ago. This is the Yakima Camp Blanket in Mineral. I used it a couple of years ago for a table cover on the farm table HERE.

And speaking of Burberry plaid...
My favorite, most used clothing accent ever is my Burberry scarf! My husband bought it for my birthday about 10 years ago and it's used constantly during winter as it can be worn with almost any neutral, and perfect with jeans and a sweater. If it looks familiar, I'm wearing it in my photo on the sidebar.

Back to winter decor...

I have quite a few red/green/blue Tartan throws that I use during Christmas, but I love the browns and neutrals during late fall and Thanksgiving. I love the English Country look; mixing Tartan plaid, toile, ticking and tweeds. Even paisley works with layered cozy bedding.

Here are more posts with Tartan plaids...

Now run by Amber's and see what she's doing with her collected dishware...

  3. I am loving browns and tans right now Debra. Burberry is one of my all time favorite patterns. I only have a knock-off wool blanket shawl and a lighter faux Burberry scarf but I love them. All of the pillows and blankets you are using now can work right into Valentine's Day too. Nothing looks Christmasy with your warmer reds. Also love the inspiration photos of course!

Have a blessed Sunday and enjoy your vintage cottage weekend!

  6. I love how you've mixed the tartan with the floral and toile patterns. Wool is wonderful way to keep the cozy in a room for winter after the Christmas decor is away.
