It only took 5 years...

I'm usually pretty diligent on getting a task or a job done. I can make excuses with the best of them, but when it's something I actually want to do I get it accomplished quickly. But, it's been 5 years since my mom moved and didn't have a place for this wonderful old porch column and it's been sitting in my sister's garage waiting for me to pick it up.

My underlying reason is that I didn't know what to do with it at the previous house, and secondly, I didn't think it would fit in my little CRV. Fast forward to Memorial Day weekend when I actually made a plan with my husband to go and at least try to get it over here to the new place. Turned out it really wasn't a problem, just needed to be wrapped up in a mover's blanket and slide it between the front seats.

We needed to do a little clean-up before bringing it into the house. Some spider nests and a few mud-dabber abodes had to be sucked out of the inside since it is hollow. That was fun. We found a long tube that had come from something (who knows, my husband is a pack rat too). We attached that to the vacuum and then gave it a quick wipe down. I didn't want to paint it because it has a good vintage patina.

It's really funny, because from the moment I saw this room on our first visit to this house I envisioned the column in that corner... and thankfully it fit. That corner has a gas line connection that shows, so it helps conceal that pretty well.

And in true "domino" dynamics I was then able to hang up my canvas on the other side of the armoire. I hadn't hung it yet because I knew I'd probably need to scooch down the armoire, that holds the TV.

I took these pics last week, but I'm getting ready to bring out a little red/white/blue for July 4th. I probably won't go over the top to decorate, because we're still doing projects, but I'm ready for a little change-up in here. Our older daughter will be here near the end of the month for a quick visit, so a little Patriotic color is needed.

Doing the post last week about the Front Porch in Transition, kick started me to get the porch and door painted. So last weekend we got busy and the result has made a major change. The porch looks totally different; clean and bright and so much bigger. We loved the natural wood color, but this is much more cohesive with the roof line and the rest of the house. I'll be sharing it soon. We closed on our old house last Friday, so that was a big celebration. This whole move has taken about 11 months considering we had to update both houses. We didn't do near as much work at the old house, but wow, it took me forever to get things sorted and dealt with. The couple that bought the house from us have two teenage boys, so the basement will be perfect for them.

OK, Hope you're off to a good week,

I love how you placed the column in the corner of your room. It's perfect there, and I don't blame you for not painting it. Your living room looks so cozy! And I love your wood ceilings! I would love for you to share at Homestyle Gathering link party each week! The party goes live Tuesday mornings at 9 AM and is open until Saturday at 7 PM. I hope to see you there!

  10. Wow! What a beautiful column. Even though it is a 'statement' piece, it's quite understated and look perfect in your home. I don't envy the cleaning job you had to do, though! Ew! Thanks for sharing at Tuesday Turn About, Debra!
