I've mentioned that I don't have the wall space at this house that I'd like to have, since I have several pieces of furniture taking up the space instead. You can also get away with more wall decor when you have high ceilings, which we don't have here. We hung up a few larger paintings and prints and I'm still trying to make decisions on more "accent" prints. But for now, I'm feeling like things look a bit more finished and like "home".
This little antique washstand had been at our family home while I was growing up. Mom had it next to the front door, painted this pretty sage/celedon green. That was her go to color during the 60's and 70's along with golds and creams. It had it's original marble top on it that featured a backsplash piece. When we made the move about 6 years ago, despite my cautions the old marble broke in two. I was a little sick, but the movers replaced the top and it turned out really lovely; minus a backsplash piece. I was ok with it because the marble was much prettier and cleaner.
(before the gray chalk paint update a few years ago)
It had been in the basement,
so I'm glad it worked here in the little corner of the Dining Room.
I'm using a smaller silver platter under the ironstone tureen, and my little French Girl bust.
The Dining Room isn't very large, but larger than the last house which really wasn't a "room" just an area. And of course, my furniture is large so as in the rest of the house, the square footage is sucked up by the furniture. The table is not quite centered, but the little French Chandelier was already hung before I realized that would be an issue.
The house sits back on a small rise, so even though we live on a moderately busy street you cannot see in the windows. I wanted the antique triptych mirror to sit on the back of the buffet to give the extra privacy since we leave the draperies open for the wonderful light.
I had to move the wire basket of Hydrangeas around to get better shots, so I just now realized that the table runner is a little mussed in these pics.
Week before last I worked on both of the china cabinets. This one is a little more subdued and a little less likely to see change than the Garden Room Cupboard which sees a lot of seasonal additions. This one holds my good Noritake china, and crystal stems, both current and antique. I'll share a little more on some of the pretty little misfits a bit later.
This antique mirror looks a little plain and lonesome here in the corner,
but I'd like to hang a small tray or platter underneath it for some added interest.
My long lost French-y sconces are looking for a permanant spot. I'm not sure if they will work in here, but I hope so.
After trying several prints, this antique milkmaid print seems to fit this space best. I like to change out this print with a few other seasonal ones, so I hope the others will fit.
I love this little vintage wire plant stand because it's so easy to use in any space. It adds a little interest without taking up a lot of room. When we have guests for dinner, I'll just move it out to give better seating access.
Well, I feel a little better now that I've updated the Dining Room a bit. The Living Room and Entry had a few art pieces hung up, so they're feeling a little more complete now too. I'll share them soon.
