New House Journal: Painting the Antique Sideboard Buffet

We've been working weekends at the new house, and I've been spending at least one day a week there working on my own. We tend to work on bigger jobs on the weekends, then I do some things that I can get accomplished on my own without Hubby's help the rest of the week. OK ... some days are just spent doing laundry and resting up for the next round of fun.

I've had a few furniture painting projects that I wanted to complete before the move, because I know once we're over at the new house we will be busy for weeks just trying to settle in. Then we have a lot of stuff that will need to be sorted and dealt with over here. Our current house is in good shape, so it won't take much to get it presentable for being listed.

Welcome to the paint factory that has taken over most of the basement family room. I'm sharing a space with stacked moving boxes, wardrobe boxes, dismantled exercise equipment, and oh yes, the black "Mini" cat whose tail you can see in the Right Lower side of the pic. She's such a good helper that she's tried to bite the paintbrushes and knock over my tubs of paint.

Earlier this Fall I shared a post about a few furniture pieces that I hope to use again, "What will go where?" Over here they've been in the lower level family area, since I haven't had space upstairs to use them.

So here's the big offender, the antique oak sideboard that I've had for over 40 years. It was my great aunt's and after her passing was used at my grandparent's house. I remember it being in an upstairs bedroom when I was in grade school. It was probably built late 1800's. It has pretty lines and carvings, but isn't a particularly well made piece. It had blackened over the years, so I had it stripped and I used tongue oil to redo it. Problem was that as time has passed it's turned that dreaded shade of oaky-orange. I haven't used it for 20 years because it just wasn't pretty anymore, and who wants furniture around that's an eyesore?

I had a few people ask me not to paint it, but I'd rather paint it and use it, instead of hide it in a storage area because it has a bad case of ugly. So I want to use it in the hearth room along the long wall, behind the new seating area. (about where the step ladder is in this pic) There will need to be a traffic area behind the sofa, so I'm hoping it will work there.

(that's wet paint on the wall making a reflection)

I started with a couple of coats of ASCP in a greige mix of Old White, French Linen, and some gray mix. Then I used a couple of coats of White, Old White and my conglomeration of grays that are Latex mix. Gave it a good sanding, some distressing, then a light coat of Minwax Polyurethane Liquid in Satin.

I think it's turned out pretty well, and I feel like the off white result is a huge improvement over the orange. sorry. couldn't stand it any longer.

I couldn't lift the top piece back up onto the back by myself, so it's still on the floor waiting for a little tweaking on the supports. The curved ornamental piece on the top is going to "show off" a little. I'm really happy I took the plunge and did this after years and years of hiding it.

Can't wait to share this with you at the new house. It's looking pretty good, and I'm repainting some of the "Pre-existing" white woodwork that's in the kitchen and hearth room area. The shop warned me beforehand that we would need to "touch up" after the carpet install, but our new white woodwork baseboards in the bedrooms and hall were pretty beat up. The paint really hasn't had a chance to "cure" so there were some nicks and scratches. That was pretty disheartening seeing our expensive paint job in a bit of a mess. So that's what I've done this week. Thank goodness I have a paintbrush and know how to use it.

Here's the old steamer trunk I recently redid. You can read that post HERE.

This little French Desk also got a mini-makeover

and this Pie Safe Cupboard

I think I've got these several pieces with a bit of a freshen up
ready to go to their new home.
Hopefully after Christmas we'll be ready to start!

  1. Wow! You've been so busy! At least you can see your progress by journaling it. If we could only journal all the worries that keep us awake at night....but then we'd never sleep, too busy documenting it all. I hope you have a tiny little bit of Christmas somewhere where you can see it, even if it's a jar of lights on a counter. Sending loving thoughts your way....

    1. I DO have some Christmas over here at the house now. My Hydrangea Christmas wreath is on the old door, and I have some Tartan Pendleton blankets out. That's about it. The new place really needs something Christmas, but I've been using my fireplace each day I'm there, and that has been a good substitute for decor. I was awake till 3 this morning just not able to sleep. I may have a few things on my mind. tehe.

  2. This looks great. I really love painted furniture. It makes the lines just pop. Orange oak is not easy to live with. All of our oak has been painted. The furniture that I painted five years ago now has knick and scratches. Chippy and shabby but not in a good way if you know what I mean. Sorry about your baseboards.

  4. You've been busy, busy, busy!!! I actually HATE to paint, but it's time to re-do some of the trim in my house after 3 1/2 years of living here. Can't wait to see you settle into your new house!

  5. The paint looks beautiful! I'm with you...if painting it makes it a piece you will use, then paint it is! I'm enjoying seeing all of your progress!

  7. Debra,
I am in total agreement with you that it is better to'paint~and~use'
your vintage pieces than to hide them away or put them in storage!
This piece is going to make your room design come to life. . .
and a new life for the piece.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas, dear one!
    Pat
P.S. Loved catching a glimpse of your 'helper's' tail!
