It's time to do a little celebrating the Irish way,
so I thought I'd try something a little different this year,
and share some decor inspiration with an iconic kitchen staple
...the Irish Cupboard.
These photos are from the March 2014 edition of British Country Living.
I couldn't find the photos on line so I took a couple of snaps
to share this wonderful example of a British Cupboard.
This is another example from Carolyn Westbrook's Kitchen
in her book Carolyn Westbrook Home.
I've been a fan of these cupboards forever;
the perfect display piece for an Irish/English/Welsh/Scottish cottage
...but you DO need a good size space.
Look how similar these two cupboards are.
The usual distinguishing mark is that they are a "Step-back" Cupboard.
meaning the top Hutch is not as deep as the bottom dresser.
This gives more room for larger serving pieces to be set out.

How about some Irish China to set a lovely
Holiday table?
Just the bottom dresser in stripped pine.
A few French and Belgian pieces of Enamelware in Green.
speaking of Green
LOVE this, you can tell this is not just decor,
but a functional piece of counter space.
French Cupboards
I'm not claiming to be an expert on English and French Country furniture,
just having some fun and sharing some wonderful pieces
for inspiration and oogling!
Happy St. Patrick's Week!

Absolutely amazing collection of photos! Makes me want one!
ReplyDeleteFun post to celebrate the Irish. We have an Irish pine glass front cupboard. It is a large piece and the star of our kitchen sitting room. Thanks for sharing all the fun pieces.
ReplyDeleteWow, these are all gorgeous pieces of furniture. I don't know which one I like the best!
ReplyDeleteThese cupboards are all beautiful! They really remind me of my kitchen/breakfast room hutch that my hubby made for me! We were in Lancaster county and saw a BIG cupboard and he asked me if I would like a cabinet like that? UGH, YEAH!!!! So he made a schetch on a napkin, remembered the details and made it for me! He even did it like the Amish and used no nails bit did it all with tongue and groove and pegs! I love it and will never get rid of it. Thanks for sharing all these Debra!!!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this post. Now I have to go back and look at it again. :) Deb
ReplyDeleteMy heart is all aflutter!!!! I've dreamed of those dressers......I want the first one with all the yellow ware and mocha pottery!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my, drooling over each and every photo! I adore each and every one. I love that they are step back cupboards. I didn't realize that was a characteristic of Irish cupboards. That green enamelware made my heart swoon! Thanks for sharing so many lovelies with SYC.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
If I could have a cupboard in every room, I would! Loving that some are painted and some are natural wood. Filled with your favorite crockery, it really doesn't matter : )
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful. Love love!
ReplyDeletewhat a fun post for all the dishphiles, and cupboard freaks. LOL. One of the first photos had a string of mocha ware mugs hanging---so interesting. Of course I wanted to know what everything was---so many beautiful pieces, new and old. Thanks so much for the smiles and leads to follow, Sandi
ReplyDeleteYour photos left me drooling. Just had a cabinet maker in today to measure and determine the cost of adding a built in cabinet like the ones you've shown here. Will cover an archway and have hooks for jackets on the entryway side. thanks for putting together this post. It's just what I needed.
ReplyDeleteI have had a couple of beautiful hutches that I have painted-white with grey distressing and had to sell them to move. What I love about other countries and their furniture and how they use the pieces amaze me. How I love looking at a hutch that is stacked with jars, and food and I think it looks amazing, and then if I did that, it would look messy. It must be the setting the hutch is in also, with the right flooring and walls. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteLove this post with all of the gorgeous pieces! I wish I had the space to have one of these large cupboards. Ahhhh. Ooooh. Sheila
ReplyDeleteThey are all beautiful and full of gorgeous wares...fun!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing at AMAZE ME MONDAY!
Blessings,
Cindy
