Perfect Patina...

On our trips to St. Louis we always try to make it to at least one antique store, flea, or mall before coming home. The trip before this last one we visited two of our fave places, Big Bend Antiques and Treasure Aisle, both in Maplewood.





This tole basket had some heavily rusted areas,
 but it's perfect chippy patina made it impossible to leave behind.




It was really dirty, and even after a soft toothbrush cleaning,
it still had some grungy spots.






And this next piece was love at first sight.
I'm not sure exactly what it came from,
but I think it may have been from some sort of small stove.
any ideas?



It originally had a knob at the bottom too.
It's iron, and super heavy.
Maybe a small wood burning or coal, parlor stove...?



It's on the hearth for these pics.
I'm not sure what I'll do with it,
but it's here for now.



I'm buying much less these days. Being on overload for the last 7 or 8 years selling, I've become much pickier about what I bring home. It really has to be different and definitely call my name. These two patinaed sweethearts really knew how to get my attention. And I've learned if there's something that won't leave me alone, I better get it, otherwise I end up regretting it.
The weather has been amazing the last few days; short sleeve and flip flop weather. Hopefully I can get some plants potted for the deck soon, gosh, I'm so behind on everything. Oh, but I DID see my first hummingbird yesterday morning. YAY!! Hope you're having a great week! See ya Thursday morning for...

    Cheers to being more selective (love your picks, esp. the fireplace cover, which is my guess) and to seeing your first hummingbird!
    I'm keeping my eyes closed for hummers until 2 weeks from now, as I will be traveling and won't be able to keep their nectar fresh - so I wait until I return to place the feeders.
    It's good to know the Midwest now has Spring....now we can all share in the beauty!

    Good buys - both great pieces. I agree and think that one piece is probably from a stove of some kind. Looks good where you have it.

    I love the pieces you found. I bet that second find is from an old fireplace or stove. It is amazing what ever it is. Great treasures.

    Those are two great rusty pieces. That does look like some kind of stove door. I haven't planted anything yet and I'm in the south. I am really behind, but we have had some very strange and much cooler weather this year.

    I don't know what it could possibly be from, but it's an exquisite piece! Love the texture and detail on that relief!

    I know what you mean about being more discriminating with what we buy. I emptied out a carload of "junk" from our house and garage and I'm going to try my hardest not to fill it up again!!

    I'm with you... don't buy it unless you love it. If it's just a good deal, it's not, because you are going to end of getting rid of it. Love the thingy on your fireplace. I'm not sure what it is either.

    Love all your treasure over here, both the basket and the stove like of flue-cover like piece it's just as beautiful as can be and it would have called out my name for sure.

    I am so like you these days only letting pieces capture my heart that are simple and aged with history and if to much comes in then something in my smaller cozy home has to leave, keeping it a biton the simple lines.
    Debra I was at Target looking at bed sheets, I love that fieldcrest line and I came across this ne line called threshold, I could not turn down this galvanized garden sphere that called out my name and this is something because I really like things less produced and more with age of history but this piece was enough coolness I had to have it. I think I will age it in the garden beds a while more and then bring it back in. :)

    Have a great time placing that beauty here and there in your home until you found the perfect place for it.
    It truly has your name all over it, and it looks beautifully soulful in your home.

    What gorgeous pieces you found. That basket is just great and the iron piece does look like it is from a wood burning stove, doesn't it??? They are just stunning and the one piece looks gorgeous in front of the fireplace.

    The second piece that is sitting on your hearth is a fantastic find. I saw similar pieces at flea markets in France that were used in fireplaces at the back to reflect the heat. Since yours has a knob, I'm not sure that is the same thing.

    On one of those gorgeous days this week, I, too, was enjoying the patina of the bakers rack from the elements of the Prairie. My MoMa would NOT understand, at all. In her time everything was to stark white and pristine...I'm sure I challenged her in many, many ways!!!
