Black Tole Trays

I started collecting black tole trays about 12 years ago when my son-in-law brought me a large reproduction one back from England. He had found it in the gift shop at Buckingham Palace, and from then on I was smitten. Some can be pretty pricey, so I try to look for the bargains. My little collection has steadily grown, but this last few weeks I've been on a roll.

I found this one on Etsy here at a great price, and was so happy to find it, despite the small areas of rust. It's a pretty good size, and if perfect, these can set you back a penney or two.

I'm sticking with hand-painted ones for now, even if they're a little rusty.
( a little rust never hurts anything anyway! right?)

It's now setting on my double ovens, making a pretty statement.

Before, this smaller one just didn't show up enough.

Then, this last week when Anne and I were out scouring the shops,  I found this one with pink flowers. It's in the Dining Room for now on an old black wooden folding luggage stand.

Then, in St. Louis I came across this one that had pink roses.
I found a spot on the kitchen counter for this one.

And then a baby one from St. Louis too...
Anne put it here on top of the scales and I think it looks so sweet!

right behind one of my chalkware lambies.

I found this other smaller one a while back,
and it has made it's way to the countertop.

This was from last Fall,
love them lined up on the backsplash.

I've been tempted with other background colors, but there's something about the black ones that just grabs me. I think it's that they remind me of an English Country kitchen, and I love the contrast of the black with the antique white cabinets.

I'll be joining in for these parties this week:

Thrifty Finds at Southern Hospitality
Metamorphosis Monday at Between Naps on the Porch
Table Top Tuesday at A Stroll Thru Life
Nifty Thrifty Tuesday at Coastal Charm
Tuesday Treasures at My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia
Cowgirl Up at Cedarhill Ranch
Wow Us Wednesday at Savvy Southern Style
Sweet and Simple Friday at Rooted in Thyme
And be sure and come back Tuesday afternoon for the Blogaversary Give Away. I'll be giving away 3 (yep, 3 of them) copies of Carolyn Westbrook's new book, Through the French Door. See you tomorrow for Monday Marketplace!

xoxo,

  3. Debra, you really have a great collection of these trays going on there. They are so pretty. I love the gorgeous flowers on them. I have a huge one that's almost 27 inches by 18 inches. It is a burgundy colour with muted flowers.
It's so huge it won't fit on our standard coffee table so it's leaning against the wall in the family room! I like your small round one in the kitchen. A nice size. Pamela

  9. I love how you display your collection of trays. Recently I found a really big tole painted black tray on the curb (yes in the trash). I snatched it up and took it home.

  10. You HAVE been on a roll, Debra! I love them all and where you've put them. I also love the tray I can see across from the new one you found with the pink roses on the counter. That one looks lovely, too, with the scene in the middle. Do we all have that good for nothing cabinet over a refrigerator, oven or microwave? Such a waste, isn't it. I think the only thing it is good for is to prop up things we lean up against it!

  34. Quite a collection -- I don't mind the rust on things like this because it adds to the character of them. I love the detail on the larger ones but my favorite I think is the small, round one! I picked up a set of 4 small ones at our thrift store (5X7). I don't think they're really 'old' but I couldn't resist them!

  36. I collected these also back in the day, but when they became hot, I sold 'em all...for that pretty penny you referred to. I only bought the black and the blood red ones. Those are the hardest to find, so your collection is truly outstanding.

  41. Merciful Heavens I nearly missed the trays Debra. Because I am covered up with the delightful MINI WEES (the grand kids) and I am not used to wee kiddos I tell you. I am tired. The black is so fetching in contrast to the cabinets. I have a huge oval hand painted black one you would love. hugs, GRANDMA MINI WEE
