The Gray Day

Each day for the last four years when I have walked into the house from the garage, I have passed these amazing gray shutters leaning against a stack of plastic bins.  I'd glance at them and think, "what will I do with you?" and each day they would say to me, "don't sell us, we can be something you'd love".

So the day finally came when I decided to act on that conversation.

I have been having that want-to-do-something-different
feeling since New Years,
and I thought I'd try them in the Entry above my white console.

You see, I've had this issue with gray and tan.
I wasn't sure that they would work together,
but I thought I'd give it a shot.

I think I like them together...

The white helps balance them out.

I moved my round white mirror to the other wall.
I'll see how long this stays like this,
but for now...it's satisfied my urge to make a change.

What kind of changes have you made since New Years?

joining in on these great parties!

  8. I've been hesitant to mix gray and tan, also. I see wonderful pictures of the combination, but I'm pretty timid about that mix. You have done it very successfully. Maybe I should try! Sally

  25. I love old shutters too. I have one (yes not the pair) that is a steel blue and chippy all over. When I saw it I fell in love. It is currently in my bedroom, but I always feel that there is somewhere better for it. Still waiting for the answer. I love what you did with yours.

Have a great day and thanks for sharing your inspiration.

  30. I'd say the shutters MAKE this group, otherwise it would just be any other console table vignette. The white pops right off the gray backdrop with the great texture. You've chosen accessories very wisely by paying special attention to details that would coordinate and complement each other, such as the bird picture (tan, white and grey), the metallic of the lamp and shade decoration, silver trim around the clockface, silver trays & terrarium below, even the little blue-grey flowers mixed in the planter. The three neutral colors of grey, white and tan are a beautiful combination here and the accessories are not too matchy- matchy. Very pleasing to the eye and professional looking. Clean, crisp and gorgeous. Gongrats on a great job, Love it! Warm Hugs,

  35. The gray shutters look great w/ the taupe-ish paint. I'm still looking for the perfect taupe (even though everyone else seems to be painting their walls gray). The bird print looks perfect combined w/ the shutters and the white flowers are gorgeous. If they're faux, they look real! Happy Weekend!

  38. It looks great. Luv the contrast. On the show WHAT NOT TO WEAR tan & gray would always go together becoz they are both neutrals. You've proved it to be true. :)

  39. I love how you used those shutters! I used to think the same thing about gray and tan, but they actually do work together well. As a reminder to that fact, you can look at the Patina Style book cover. It's so pretty and those are the colors used.

  40. Debra, the shutters absolutely make this vignette....simply stunning!

  41. I love the grey and beiges and browns together~must be a trend in decorating from restoration hardware industrial kind of palette that is going on~it looks really fresh! I used that same palette in my office. The white table with the grey shutters looks great!

  42. PS I meant to also say I had to go to the pop up window too because of commenting issues...

  43. It really looks great. With the details of silver/pewter peeking out of lamp it ties in with the shutters well.
Then the added bonus of all the little brown, textural wicker components under the table, it makes it sing!
Good job ! It makes a wonderful, different and most importantly unexpected backdrop for the table, which by the way is gorgeous...

  44. They make a gorgeous backdrop Debra! And you are right...the white is a good balance!

  51. I can comment again! Thankfully! Your little help fixed the problem on my end. I love your console, by the way, just enchanting! Tan and grey are wonderful compansions. There are several blogs out there who, after about Jan 1, I was unable, and am still unable, to comment. I emailed them about the 'comments being embedded in the post' like you said, but I don't think they have done anything yet b/c I still cannot comment. andrea@townandprairie

  52. Debra, lately I have been loving grey and tan together. I guess it's a reflection of what I am seeing outside now that it is winter. the sky is much more grey than blue lately and the trees are certainly not green but an earthy tan or grey. there is something very soothing and neutral about these two colors together. I love the shutters there in your entry.
